BOP Cass Release Scope
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. It is the correct public locator for a person who served a sentenced federal term. No BOP institution was identified in Cass County. The system remains relevant because a federal prosecution can involve a Cass County resident or events in the area while the sentence is served elsewhere.
BOP is not a substitute for the Cass County Jail. A Cass booking, county bond, state sentence, or Itasca contract placement belongs in the county or Minnesota system. Likewise, BOP does not operate the public historical lookup for USMS federal pretrial detention, and it does not decide ICE civil detention. Identify the legal authority before choosing the locator.
Search BOP Cass Releases
Federal identifier search is stronger than name search. BOP accepts the register number and other listed federal identifiers, including DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers. If no number is known, use the name fields and compare age, race, sex, and record details carefully. A common name should never be matched from spelling alone.
- Open the BOP locator and choose Find By Number when a federal identifier is available.
- Enter the register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number in the matching field. Otherwise use Find By Name.
- Compare the returned name, identifier, age, race, and sex with the federal case.
- Read the location or status and Release Date exactly as shown.
- Confirm the register number and release event against the federal docket before linking the result to Cass County.
The official locator screen is preserved in the project image manifest.
The interface supports both number and name routes, but the federal case number and person identifiers remain vital for a sound match.
A release date can change while credits are recalculated. Treat a future date as current agency data, not a guarantee. Preserve the observation date when release timing matters.
BOP’s coverage begins with federal records from 1982 forward. An older matter can fall outside the locator’s stated range, and a no-result can also reflect an incorrect identifier or name variation. Search both the known register number and the federal docket before deciding that no federal record exists. The locator is a custody tool, not a complete biography of every federal case.
BOP Released Status Meaning
BOP’s record explanation says that a past Release Date with no facility shown means release occurred on that date and the person is no longer in BOP custody. The locator often displays “Released.” Use the interface’s exact word. Do not paraphrase a different status into release.
| BOP display | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Released with past date | BOP reports that its custody ended on that date. |
| Named institution | The person is associated with that BOP facility record, subject to current locator detail. |
| In Transit | A specialized movement status, not proof of community release. |
| Regional office or CCM | An administrative or community-corrections designation that must be read under BOP definitions. |
| UNKNOWN | The confinement term is not determined; it is not a release finding. |
BOP expressly warns that a person with a past release can still be on parole or supervised release or held in another criminal-justice system. A federal release also says nothing by itself about entry into Cass County. The federal docket can identify the sentencing court, detention and release orders, and later supervision proceedings. It should be joined with the locator rather than replaced by it.
The BOP records-explanation image comes from the same official source.
The agency explanation provides the limits needed to avoid treating “no longer in BOP custody” as the end of every legal status.
BOP Cass Release Destinations
A person leaving a BOP institution can enter federal supervised release, another authority’s custody, or the community without BOP confinement. The public result alone may not identify where the person went. The judgment and later federal docket entries are the durable legal trail. A transfer to USMS, ICE, a state, or a local authority is not an unrestricted community release.
- Federal supervised release
- Court-ordered community supervision after imprisonment, separate from BOP physical custody.
- Detainer
- A request or notice that another authority may take custody when the current hold ends.
- Transfer
- A change to another custodian, even when BOP reports its own custody ended.
- Release date
- The date BOP associates with the end or expected end of its custody status.
No BOP result should be used to infer what Cass County Jail did. If Cass first held the person, request the Cass adult register entry for its recorded discharge type and receiving agency. Then read the BOP intake or federal docket as the next custody phase. The Cass County release search provides that county record path.
BOP Federal Docket Check
PACER is the public access system for federal court records. For a sentenced federal person, the docket can supply the judgment, commitment, amended sentence, and supervision events that explain the locator result. Sealed material and access fees or rules can limit what appears. The docket is not a minute-by-minute prison log, but it can establish the legal authority behind custody and release.
Match the person through the federal case and register number. A District of Minnesota prosecution can have no Cass jail event, and a Cass County resident can serve a sentence in another state. County residence, prosecution district, prison location, and release destination are four separate facts. State only what the official records support.
If the case was still pretrial, BOP may be the wrong system. USMS manages federal prisoners awaiting trial, sentencing, or transport and often uses contract beds. The federal detention or release order is the key public record for that phase. Do not force a blank BOP search into a conclusion that the person was released.
BOP Federal Release Records
The locator is the first public route, while the docket supplies the court trail. If a more specific BOP record is needed, identify the exact existing document and the person’s federal identifiers. A request should not ask an agency to create a new custody timeline or determine legal conclusions. Record systems can contain protected information, and public availability depends on federal law and agency rules.

BOP locator record explanation
No Cass-specific BOP institution, office, phone, or release desk was identified in the reviewed sources. Omitting an unsupported local address is more accurate than sending a records inquiry to the Cass jail. Use the live locator’s facility information for a currently confined person and the federal docket for the case.
For an older released person, capture the result exactly as displayed, including the register number and Release Date. Then record the lookup date. If the docket and locator differ, do not choose the more convenient date. Court corrections, sentence amendments, and agency recalculation can explain a change, while only the responsible federal office can resolve the maintained record.
The public locator also does not show every condition of federal supervised release. Those terms arise from the judgment and later court orders. A person can be free from BOP confinement while still subject to court supervision, and a violation can lead to later federal proceedings. The docket is therefore essential after the BOP custody endpoint.
Note: A past BOP release date should be timestamped because agency calculations and displayed data can change.
BOP Versus Cass Release
The decisive question is which authority held the person at the event being verified. Cass’s adult jail register covers a Cass commitment. MNDOC covers a state commitment. BOP covers the sentenced federal term. USMS and the federal docket cover federal pretrial custody. ICE ODLS addresses civil immigration detention. One person can move through several of these systems, but no one locator merges the full history.
| Custody phase | Correct release trail |
|---|---|
| Cass jail booking | Cass adult register, VINE, and county court record. |
| Sentenced federal imprisonment | BOP locator, register number, and federal judgment. |
| Federal pretrial detention | PACER detention/release order and USMS records route. |
| Immigration detention | ICE ODLS and the appropriate ERO field office. |
A clean conclusion names the system and event: “BOP reports release from federal custody on the displayed date,” not “Cass County released the person.” It then notes any known supervision or receiving authority. That wording preserves the difference between federal custody, county custody, and presence in Cass County.
If another agency accepted the person, verify that next custody phase in its own record. The BOP endpoint and the receiving agency’s start should align, but small posting lags can occur. Preserve both dates rather than assuming one system corrected the other.
