Cass Jail Release Destinations

The Cass County Detention Center is the county custody point in Walker. A person who leaves its legal custody may return to the community after bond, a court order, time served, or completion of a local sentence. Other outcomes do not end all custody. A court can commit the person to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, another county can receive the person, or a federal authority can take custody. Court probation, electronic monitoring, and state supervised release are also distinct legal statuses. The recorded discharge type and any receiving agency matter more than the fact that someone changed buildings.

Cass has an especially important local wrinkle. It contracts for beds at the Itasca County Jail. The live Cass report includes the field “Housed at Itasca Jail?” A “Yes” means physical placement in Itasca while the person remains a Cass detainee. It does not mean the person was released by Cass. Even a move away from Walker can be a transfer rather than a community release. The safest confirmation pairs Cass’s discharge record with the status shown by the receiving agency.

Confirm Cass Jail Releases

The county’s live In-Custody Report answers whether Cass currently carries a person as a detainee. Its listed fields include name, age, city and state, booking date and time, charge text, and the Itasca housing indicator. It does not display a discharge date, release reason, case result, booking photograph, or recent-release window. A name that has dropped from the PDF is therefore a lead. It is not final release proof.

Use the official sources in sequence. Keep names, birth dates, and case details aligned so a similar name does not become a false match.

1. Check the current Cass report and record its printed date. If the name appears, read the Itasca housing field before drawing any conclusion about location.
2. Search Minnesota VINE for the same person and verify the reporting agency and exact status phrase.
3. Review the Cass criminal case through Minnesota Court Records Online for a bond, dismissal, sentencing, commitment, or later order.
4. Request the maintained adult jail-register entry when the date, time, legal basis, discharge type, or destination is needed.

A VINE status from Cass shows what the reporting custodian recorded, but it may not supply the legal reason or destination. A court order explains legal authority, yet it may not record the exact hour jail staff completed the discharge. The historical Cass register is the most direct county record for that event. Cass Jail Discharge Record

The March 2026 Cass Sheriff data inventory describes an adult jail register that is richer than the live PDF. The maintained ledger includes a person’s name, commitment number, admit and discharge date, offense, length of sentence, and type of discharge. The inventory gives parole, furlough, and sentence completion as examples. Those distinctions explain why a simple “released” label can hide a transfer, limited leave, or another custody outcome.

Minnesota Statutes section 13.82, subdivision 2, classifies the date, time, and legal basis for release from custody or incarceration as public arrest data. Section 13.85 still protects classified medical, psychological, safety, investigative, and security information. A focused request should ask for the public fields in an existing record and accept lawful redaction. Cass does not publish a historical release archive or a stated online retention period.

Cass Jail Records Contact

The jail can answer operational questions, while the Sheriff’s Records Division is the documented county request point for maintained release data. Release-processing hours, a public exit, waiting area, property pickup schedule, and transportation plan were not published in the reviewed sources. Do not infer those details from the records office schedule. Call before traveling if the immediate physical location or pickup arrangement matters.

The county forms page links the data-request guide and directs submissions to Records. A requester can seek inspection, copies, or both. Inspection of public data is free. For 100 or fewer letter or legal pages, copies may cost $0.25 per page; other formats may carry allowed actual costs. Ask for an estimate and identify the person, approximate booking period, commitment record, release fields, and receiving agency if that field is public.

Cass Jail Capacity Transfers

Cass describes the Walker jail as a 60-bed male and female facility that can hold people for up to one year. The county also says the jail runs above maximum capacity and contracts for 40 beds at Itasca. That operating fact is not just background. It changes how a released-person inquiry must be handled. Physical location can change while Cass custody stays in place, and the roster was designed to expose that difference through its Itasca field.

The official county jail page is the source for those figures. Its view also explains why contact with one building alone may not resolve the release question. If the person was housed at Itasca for Cass, first determine which agency entered the discharge and whether the receiving jail has a separate physical-release record. A legal Cass discharge and an Itasca door movement may be related but are not interchangeable records.

The current report also omits bond, case disposition, commitment number, release reason, and release time. Those omissions are practical search limits. They prevent the PDF from serving as a release ledger, even when two saved copies show that a name disappeared. Cass publishes no refresh cadence for the inmate report. The daily 7 a.m. update statement belongs to the separate warrants PDF and cannot be applied to custody data.

Cass Jail Program Status

Huber work release can make a person appear to be out while custody continues. Cass permits qualifying participants to work outside under court and Sheriff authorization. The county states a cost of $140 per week paid in advance, up to 50 work hours, and no more than six consecutive workdays. These movements are part of incarceration. They are not bond-out, discharge, or proof that the person is free of the jail commitment.

Sentence to Serve creates a second source of confusion. Eligible participants may perform voluntary work for government or nonprofit projects and receive a reduction in sentence or fines. Cass does not publish a person-level calculation formula. Program participation may affect an eventual date, but only the court, jail administration, and maintained custody record can establish the actual endpoint. A furlough likewise allows a limited absence while legal custody can remain.

Cass Release Property Records

Cass’s inventory identifies a signed prisoner-property envelope. It can contain the person’s name, arrest date, property taken before cell placement, and the date and signature when items were returned. The classification is mixed, so private fields may be removed. This record can corroborate a custody endpoint when property return is disputed, but it does not replace the adult register’s discharge date and type.

Final confirmation should answer three questions: Did Cass end its legal custody? If so, what discharge type did it record? Did another agency receive the person? Those answers prevent an Itasca placement, MNDOC commitment, work-release absence, or federal handoff from being described as community release. No single live roster provides all three. The Cass register, court order, VINE event, and receiving system must agree as far as their separate scopes allow.
